2nd Podoconiosis Conference: From Neglect to Elimination with Country Ownership

 

The 2nd Podoconiosis Conference was held under the auspices of the International Conference on Neglected Tropical Diseases (InCORNTD) in Kigali, Rwanda. Under the theme "From Neglect to Elimination with Country Ownership," over 100 delegates from 14 countries convened. Participants included individuals affected by podoconiosis, researchers, implementers, people with lived experience and policymakers, all united in the shared goal of eliminating this neglected tropical disease (NTD). This report summarizes the key conference highlights, achievements and calls to action. The
conference aligned with the WHO NTD Roadmap, emphasizing the critical role of country ownership in driving progress towards elimination.

Conference Highlights and Achievements

  • Inspiring Keynote and Testimony: The conference featured a compelling keynote address by Dr. Jules Mugabo Semahore, followed by a powerful testimony from an individual with lived experience of podoconiosis.
  • Focus on Prevention and Management: Ten-minute presentations by 17 researchers and implementing partners highlighted research and implementation best practice from five countries.
  • Increased Recognition of Podoconiosis: a 5-person panel including a communications expert and representatives of WHO and the Rwanda Biomedical Centre outlined concrete steps towards increased recognition and elimination.
  • Country-Specific Target Announcements: The conference culminated in twocountry-specific target announcements, demonstrating a commitment to action by the governments of podoconiosis-endemic countries.
  • Recognition of Excellence: Dr. Jean Paul Bikorimana and Dr. Natnael Shimelash were recognized for their outstanding presentations, with Mr. Alemayehu Bekele Kassahun receiving a special mention. All presenters received financial support to attend from the conference organizers
