In a recent interview with the European Science-Media Hub (ESMH), Prof. Marc Hübner discusses the urgent need for increased research into neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), particularly filarial diseases, which affect more than 200 million people worldwide. These diseases can cause severe, long-term health problems that impact not only patients but also their families and communities.

Dr. Hübner explains that the eWHORM project focuses on sub-Saharan Africa, where the burden of these diseases is especially high. Despite their significant health and socioeconomic impact, NTDs remain underfunded and underrepresented in global research efforts.

He also highlights the strength of eWHORM's international partnership, which brings together researchers from Europe and Africa. Working closely with institutions in Cameroon, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Tanzania, the consortium jointly designs and conducts research while ensuring that all studies receive ethical approval from both European and African partners.

This collaborative approach helps ensure that research addresses local health priorities and contributes to sustainable capacity building in the regions most affected by neglected tropical diseases.
