Kick-Off Meeting "AI Oncho" Project: Artificial Intelligence (AI) against Onchocerciasis

The participants of the "AI Oncho" project discussed the results from the previous funding period and the further course of the project during a virtual kick-off meeting. In addition to the "founding members" of the project (Institute of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology (University Hospital Bonn; headed by Prof. Dr. Achim Hörauf and Dr. Ute Klarmann-Schulz); Capgemini (headed by Dr. Daniel Kühlwein)), partners from the Institute of Medical Biometry, Informatics and Epidemiology (University Hospital Bonn), Washington University of St. Louis, the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research also attended.
In his address, Prof. Dr. Achim Hörauf pointed out the urgent need for macrofilaricidal drugs against onchocerciasis. He expressed optimism that the development of artificial intelligence for histological evaluation of clinical endpoints can make an important contribution in the fight to eliminate the disease. Capgemini presented the AI-based solution for automatic evaluation of histological nodule images based on the results achieved so far.
